According to two estimated relations between the initial period and the dynamo-generated magnetic dipole field of pulsars, we calculate the statistical distributions of pulsar initial periods. It is found that proto-pulsars are very likely to have rotation periods between 20 and 30 ms, and that most of the pulsars rotate initially at a period < 60 ms.

How to Rotate a Camera

A procedure is proposed that, given any rotatingdevice to support a camera, places the camera’s center of projection to within a tenth of a millimeter from the axis of the rotating device, even with wide angle lenses with severe distortion. Results are experimentally validated by checking that all the camera projection centers as computed through an off-theshelf calibration method are at the sa...

How do the planetary satellites rotate?

On the basis of tidal despinning timescale arguments, Peale showed in 1977 that the majority of irregular satellites (with unknown rotation states) are expected to reside close to their initial (fast) rotation states. Here we investigate the problem of typical rotation states among satellites from a viewpoint of dynamical stability. We explore location of the known planetary satellites on the “...

How dynein and microtubules rotate the nucleus.

In living cells, a fluctuating torque is exerted on the nuclear surface but the origin of the torque is unclear. In this study, we found that the nuclear rotation angle is directionally persistent on a time scale of tens of minutes, but rotationally diffusive on longer time scales. Rotation required the activity of the microtubule motor dynein. We formulated a model based on microtubules underg...
